Painted Rock Rules

Keep the community safe, fun, and respectful for everyone.

The painted rocks community thrives when everyone follows a few simple guidelines. These rules help keep our hobby safe, eco-friendly, and enjoyable for people of all ages.

Do / Don't

Do

  • Use non-toxic, water-based acrylic paints and seal your rocks with a clear coat.
  • Write the rock code, 4-digit PIN, and ROXGEO.COM clearly on the back of every rock.
  • Hide rocks in places where they can be easily spotted — park benches, trail edges, playgrounds.
  • Log your finds and hides in the app to keep the journey history accurate.
  • Be kind and respectful — painted rocks are about spreading joy and positivity.

Don't

  • Don’t use oil-based paints or materials that are harmful to the environment.
  • Don’t hide rocks in environmentally sensitive areas, national parks with restrictions, or private property.
  • Don’t place rocks where they could be a tripping hazard or danger to wildlife.
  • Don’t paint inappropriate, offensive, or political content on rocks.
  • Don’t take rocks from natural formations, riverbeds, or protected areas — buy or gather loose stones.

Recommended Materials

Use smooth river stones or craft rocks from a garden center. Acrylic paints in various colors, fine-tip brushes for detail work, and a clear polyurethane sealant will give your rocks a professional, weather-resistant finish.
