Chevron Stripes Rock Painting
Materials Needed
- Smooth, elongated rock
- Acrylic paints in 4-5 bright colors
- White acrylic paint (for base)
- Medium flat brush
- Fine detail brush
- Painter's tape or washi tape (optional)
- Clear sealant spray
- Pencil (for guidelines)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare and base coat
Wash and dry your rock. Paint the entire surface white as a base coat. This will help your bright chevron colors stand out. Let it dry completely before moving to the next step.
Step 2: Draw the zigzag guidelines
Using a pencil, draw a zigzag pattern across the rock. Start at one end and draw V-shapes that point upward, connecting them across the whole rock. Space the V-shapes evenly to create equal-width stripes.
Step 3: Paint the first color stripe
Choose your first color and carefully paint the topmost chevron stripe. Stay within the pencil lines. Use the flat brush for the main area and the detail brush near the points of the V-shapes.
Step 4: Add remaining stripes
Paint each subsequent chevron stripe with a different color, working your way down the rock. Rinse your brush between colors. Let each stripe touch the one above it. Popular color sequences include rainbow order or alternating warm and cool colors.
Step 5: Clean up edges and seal
Use the detail brush to touch up any uneven edges or points. Make sure all the V-shapes are crisp and clean. Let everything dry completely, then spray with clear sealant for a glossy, protected finish.
Step 6: Add RoxGeo Code
On the bottom or back of your rock, write ROXGEO.COM followed by a slash and your rock’s unique code (e.g. ROXGEO.COM/ABC123). This lets the finder go directly to your rock’s profile page and log their discovery. If the rock is too small for the full address, write #ROX followed by the code without spaces (e.g. #ROXABC123) — it’s short, easy to search on Google, and leads straight to your rock’s journey page. Use a fine-tip permanent marker or acrylic paint pen, and seal it with clear varnish so the code stays readable through rain, sun, and adventure.
Helpful Tips
- An elongated rock gives you more room for multiple chevron stripes.
- Use painter's tape to create crisp zigzag edges if you find freehand painting difficult.
- Rainbow color order (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple) always looks stunning.
- For very young painters, wider stripes are easier to fill than narrow ones.
- Try metallic or glitter paint for one of the stripes for extra sparkle.
- For the RoxGeo code on the bottom, use a waterproof permanent marker (like Sharpie) or an acrylic paint pen. Apply 2–3 coats of clear sealant over the code — this keeps it readable through rain, sun, and handling for months.
- Writing #ROXCODE (e.g. #ROXABC123) on your rock makes it easy to find via Google search. We actively optimize for this hashtag, so anyone who searches for it will find your rock’s profile page quickly.
- The full address ROXGEO.COM/CODE takes the finder directly to your rock’s card, where they can see its full travel history, previous finders, and photos from every stop on its journey.
