Dandelion Rock Painting
Materials Needed
- Round or oval flat rock
- Dark blue or black acrylic paint (for background)
- White acrylic paint
- Light gray acrylic paint
- Green acrylic paint (for stem and leaves)
- Fine detail brush (very fine tip)
- Toothpick
- Medium round brush
- Clear sealant spray
- Pencil
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Paint the dark background
Wash and dry your rock. Paint the entire surface with deep navy blue or black paint. Apply two coats for a solid dark background. The contrast between the dark background and white dandelion seeds will be the most striking element of this design.
Step 2: Paint the stem and seed head
Paint a thin, slightly curved green stem in the lower center of the rock. At the top, paint a small circle in white or light gray for the base of the dandelion seed head. This circle is where all the seed stems radiate from.
Step 3: Paint the radiating seed stems
Using your finest brush and white paint, paint thin lines radiating outward in all directions from the center circle, like spokes on a wheel but curved outward and varying in length. These are the delicate seed stems. Work around the full sphere from center to edge. Keep the lines thin and organic.
Step 4: Add the parachute tufts
At the tip of each seed stem, paint a tiny star or feathery tuft shape using white paint and your toothpick. Each dandelion seed has a tiny umbrella-like parachute at its tip. Add four to six tiny radiating lines at the end of each stem. Some stems can have slightly larger tufts.
Step 5: Add floating seeds and seal
Use your toothpick to dot three to five individual dandelion seeds drifting away from the main flower — tiny dots with miniature tufts suggesting the seeds being carried by the wind. Once everything is dry, apply clear sealant.
Step 6: Add RoxGeo Code
On the bottom or back of your rock, write ROXGEO.COM followed by a slash and your rock’s unique code (e.g. ROXGEO.COM/ABC123). This lets the finder go directly to your rock’s profile page and log their discovery. If the rock is too small for the full address, write #ROX followed by the code without spaces (e.g. #ROXABC123) — it’s short, easy to search on Google, and leads straight to your rock’s journey page. Use a fine-tip permanent marker or acrylic paint pen, and seal it with clear varnish so the code stays readable through rain, sun, and adventure.
Helpful Tips
- A dark background is essential — white dandelion seeds on dark is a timeless and striking contrast.
- The finest possible brush or a steady toothpick is key to the delicate radiating seed stems.
- Add a few floating seeds drifting away for a magical, windblown effect.
- The dandelion sphere looks best when the radiating lines vary slightly in length and curve.
- This minimal, elegant design suits smooth flat rocks and makes a beautiful gift.
- For the RoxGeo code on the bottom, use a waterproof permanent marker (like Sharpie) or an acrylic paint pen. Apply 2–3 coats of clear sealant over the code — this keeps it readable through rain, sun, and handling for months.
- Writing #ROXCODE (e.g. #ROXABC123) on your rock makes it easy to find via Google search. We actively optimize for this hashtag, so anyone who searches for it will find your rock’s profile page quickly.
- The full address ROXGEO.COM/CODE takes the finder directly to your rock’s card, where they can see its full travel history, previous finders, and photos from every stop on its journey.
