Rainbow Rock Painting
Materials Needed
- Flat, elongated rock
- Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple acrylic paint
- Medium flat brush
- White acrylic paint (optional, for clouds)
- Clear sealant spray
- Paper plate (for palette)
- Cup of water (for rinsing brush)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare and base coat
Wash and dry your rock. Paint the entire surface white and let it dry. This base coat will make the rainbow colors appear brighter and more vivid.
Step 2: Paint the red arc
Starting at the top of the rock, paint a wide curved stripe of red across the surface. This is the outermost band of your rainbow. Make it thick enough to be visible.
Step 3: Add remaining colors
Paint the remaining arcs one by one below the red: orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. Rinse your brush between colors and let each stripe touch the one above. Keep them roughly the same width.
Step 4: Add clouds (optional)
Using white paint, dab fluffy cloud shapes at both ends of the rainbow where the arcs meet the bottom of the rock. Use a dabbing motion with your brush for a fluffy texture.
Step 5: Seal and dry
Let everything dry completely. Apply a coat of clear sealant spray to protect your rainbow rock from rain and sun. Your rock is ready to brighten someone's day!
Step 6: Add RoxGeo Code
On the bottom or back of your rock, write ROXGEO.COM followed by a slash and your rock’s unique code (e.g. ROXGEO.COM/ABC123). This lets the finder go directly to your rock’s profile page and log their discovery. If the rock is too small for the full address, write #ROX followed by the code without spaces (e.g. #ROXABC123) — it’s short, easy to search on Google, and leads straight to your rock’s journey page. Use a fine-tip permanent marker or acrylic paint pen, and seal it with clear varnish so the code stays readable through rain, sun, and adventure.
Helpful Tips
- A white base coat makes all the colors pop — don't skip this step!
- Use a flat, elongated rock so you have room for all the colored stripes.
- If colors blend where they touch, that's okay — it creates a beautiful gradient effect.
- For very young children, use finger paints and let them paint each stripe with their fingers.
- Try adding glitter to the wet sealant for a magical sparkle effect.
- For the RoxGeo code on the bottom, use a waterproof permanent marker (like Sharpie) or an acrylic paint pen. Apply 2–3 coats of clear sealant over the code — this keeps it readable through rain, sun, and handling for months.
- Writing #ROXCODE (e.g. #ROXABC123) on your rock makes it easy to find via Google search. We actively optimize for this hashtag, so anyone who searches for it will find your rock’s profile page quickly.
- The full address ROXGEO.COM/CODE takes the finder directly to your rock’s card, where they can see its full travel history, previous finders, and photos from every stop on its journey.
