Cat Rock Painting
Materials Needed
- Round or slightly elongated rock
- Gray or orange acrylic paint (for tabby or ginger cat)
- White acrylic paint
- Black acrylic paint
- Pink acrylic paint
- Green or yellow acrylic paint (for eyes)
- Fine detail brush
- Medium flat brush
- Clear sealant spray
- Pencil
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Sketch and base coat
Wash and dry your rock. Sketch a round cat face with two pointed triangular ears at the top. Paint the whole face and ears with your chosen base color (gray for a tabby, orange for a ginger cat). Apply two coats for solid coverage.
Step 2: Paint the tabby stripes
Using a slightly darker shade of your base color, paint thin curved stripes on the forehead and cheeks, radiating outward from the center. These classic tabby M-shaped markings on the forehead are the most recognizable cat pattern. Add small stripes on the top of the head too.
Step 3: Paint the eyes and nose
Paint two large almond-shaped eyes using green or yellow paint. Add vertical slit pupils in black. Paint a tiny pink triangle for the nose. Draw a small Y-shaped line below the nose for the mouth — two short lines going down and to the sides from the base of the nose.
Step 4: Add whiskers and inner ears
Using white paint and the finest brush or a steady hand with a toothpick, draw four to six long whiskers on each side of the face, extending outward from the cheeks. Fill the inside of each ear with a pink or lighter shade to show the ear cavity.
Step 5: Add highlights and seal
Add white highlight dots to the eyes. Add a white muzzle area — two small rounded bumps below and around the nose where the whiskers emerge. Once everything is dry, apply clear sealant. Your cat rock is complete!
Step 6: Add RoxGeo Code
On the bottom or back of your rock, write ROXGEO.COM followed by a slash and your rock’s unique code (e.g. ROXGEO.COM/ABC123). This lets the finder go directly to your rock’s profile page and log their discovery. If the rock is too small for the full address, write #ROX followed by the code without spaces (e.g. #ROXABC123) — it’s short, easy to search on Google, and leads straight to your rock’s journey page. Use a fine-tip permanent marker or acrylic paint pen, and seal it with clear varnish so the code stays readable through rain, sun, and adventure.
Helpful Tips
- A round rock naturally fits a cat face — look for one that fills your palm.
- The tabby M-shaped forehead marking is the key to instant cat recognition.
- Use a very fine brush or a toothpick for delicate whiskers — they make a huge difference.
- Almond-shaped eyes with slit pupils look far more cat-like than round pupils.
- Try black paint for a sleek black cat or striped orange for a classic Halloween look.
- For the RoxGeo code on the bottom, use a waterproof permanent marker (like Sharpie) or an acrylic paint pen. Apply 2–3 coats of clear sealant over the code — this keeps it readable through rain, sun, and handling for months.
- Writing #ROXCODE (e.g. #ROXABC123) on your rock makes it easy to find via Google search. We actively optimize for this hashtag, so anyone who searches for it will find your rock’s profile page quickly.
- The full address ROXGEO.COM/CODE takes the finder directly to your rock’s card, where they can see its full travel history, previous finders, and photos from every stop on its journey.
