Snowflake Rock Painting
Materials Needed
- Smooth, round or oval rock
- Dark blue or purple acrylic paint
- White acrylic paint
- Light blue acrylic paint
- Silver acrylic paint (optional)
- Fine detail brush
- Medium flat brush
- Toothpick or thin dotting tool
- Clear sealant spray
- Pencil and ruler (for guidelines)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the dark background
Wash and dry your rock. Paint the entire surface with dark blue or deep purple paint. Apply two coats for a rich, even color. The dark background will make your white snowflake stand out beautifully.
Step 2: Draw the guide lines
Once the base is dry, use a pencil to lightly draw three lines crossing at the center of the rock, creating six evenly spaced arms. Real snowflakes always have six-fold symmetry, so this scientific detail makes your art accurate.
Step 3: Paint the main arms
Using white paint and your fine detail brush, paint along the six guide lines from the center outward. Make the lines slightly thicker near the center and thinner at the tips. Keep all arms the same length.
Step 4: Add branches and details
Add smaller branches extending from each main arm at 60-degree angles. Add tiny V-shapes, dots, or small diamond shapes along the arms. Keep the pattern symmetrical — each arm should mirror the others. Use light blue for some branches for depth.
Step 5: Add sparkle and seal
Use a toothpick to add tiny white or silver dots around the snowflake to create a sparkling, frosty effect. Add small dots between the arms for falling snow. Once fully dry, apply clear sealant spray to protect your crystal creation.
Step 6: Add RoxGeo Code
On the bottom or back of your rock, write ROXGEO.COM followed by a slash and your rock’s unique code (e.g. ROXGEO.COM/ABC123). This lets the finder go directly to your rock’s profile page and log their discovery. If the rock is too small for the full address, write #ROX followed by the code without spaces (e.g. #ROXABC123) — it’s short, easy to search on Google, and leads straight to your rock’s journey page. Use a fine-tip permanent marker or acrylic paint pen, and seal it with clear varnish so the code stays readable through rain, sun, and adventure.
Helpful Tips
- Real snowflakes always have six arms — use this as a fun science lesson about crystal formation.
- Draw guidelines with pencil first to ensure perfect symmetry.
- A round rock works best so the snowflake is centered and balanced.
- Add silver or glitter paint for an extra frosty sparkle effect.
- Make a collection of different snowflake designs — no two are alike, just like in nature!
- For the RoxGeo code on the bottom, use a waterproof permanent marker (like Sharpie) or an acrylic paint pen. Apply 2–3 coats of clear sealant over the code — this keeps it readable through rain, sun, and handling for months.
- Writing #ROXCODE (e.g. #ROXABC123) on your rock makes it easy to find via Google search. We actively optimize for this hashtag, so anyone who searches for it will find your rock’s profile page quickly.
- The full address ROXGEO.COM/CODE takes the finder directly to your rock’s card, where they can see its full travel history, previous finders, and photos from every stop on its journey.
