You Matter Rock Painting
Materials Needed
- Smooth, flat rock (any size)
- Sky blue acrylic paint
- Lavender or lilac acrylic paint
- Soft pink acrylic paint
- White acrylic paint
- Black or navy acrylic paint (for text)
- Gold acrylic paint
- Fine detail brush
- Medium flat brush
- Clear sealant spray
- Pencil
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Paint the pastel rainbow background
Wash and dry your rock. Paint the entire surface with soft sky blue. While wet, blend lavender on one half and soft pink on the other, meeting in the middle. This soft rainbow gradient creates a hopeful, nurturing atmosphere — the perfect backdrop for a "you matter" message.
Step 2: Add soft white clouds or rays
Using white paint slightly diluted with water, add soft radiating lines from the center outward — like sun rays on a gentle day. Or paint fluffy cloud shapes in the corners. These soft white elements create a gentle, ethereal quality.
Step 3: Write "YOU MATTER" prominently
Lightly sketch the words "YOU MATTER" in pencil across the center of the rock. Paint the letters using your fine brush and navy or black paint. Make the text large, clear, and easy to read — this is the whole message. Consider adding a small heart before or after the text.
Step 4: Add decorative borders and accents
Add a thin gold border around the edge of the rock. Dot small gold stars or hearts around the message text. Add tiny flowers in the corners using pink and white paint. These decorative elements make the rock look like a handmade affirmation card.
Step 5: Seal and share
Apply clear sealant when everything is dry. "You Matter" rocks are meant to be found — place them in public spaces for strangers to find, give to friends who need a boost, or leave them where someone might need a reminder of their worth.
Step 6: Add RoxGeo Code
On the bottom or back of your rock, write ROXGEO.COM followed by a slash and your rock’s unique code (e.g. ROXGEO.COM/ABC123). This lets the finder go directly to your rock’s profile page and log their discovery. If the rock is too small for the full address, write #ROX followed by the code without spaces (e.g. #ROXABC123) — it’s short, easy to search on Google, and leads straight to your rock’s journey page. Use a fine-tip permanent marker or acrylic paint pen, and seal it with clear varnish so the code stays readable through rain, sun, and adventure.
Helpful Tips
- Practice writing the message on paper first to get the size and spacing right before painting.
- Soft pastel blue and lavender create a calm, nurturing background that enhances the message.
- The message is the star — make the text large, centered, and clear.
- Place finished "You Matter" rocks in parks, libraries, or community spaces for others to discover.
- You Matter rocks are a wonderful classroom activity promoting kindness and inclusion.
- For the RoxGeo code on the bottom, use a waterproof permanent marker (like Sharpie) or an acrylic paint pen. Apply 2–3 coats of clear sealant over the code — this keeps it readable through rain, sun, and handling for months.
- Writing #ROXCODE (e.g. #ROXABC123) on your rock makes it easy to find via Google search. We actively optimize for this hashtag, so anyone who searches for it will find your rock’s profile page quickly.
- The full address ROXGEO.COM/CODE takes the finder directly to your rock’s card, where they can see its full travel history, previous finders, and photos from every stop on its journey.
